How to Choose Stainless Steel Mesh Sheet?
Define the application before selecting mesh count, wire diameter, or steel grade. What must the sheet do? It may screen particles, support a filter layer, protect an opening, or distribute airflow. These functions require different performance targets. Record particle size, flow rate, pressure, temperature, and cleaning method. Size matters.
Aperture size alone can mislead. ASTM E11 links sieve performance to nominal openings and permitted tolerances, while wire diameter affects strength and open area. For example, a fine opening may improve screening but restrict flow and increase clogging. Measure the largest and smallest particles, not only the average. Then compare the required retention with the actual aperture. Do not guess.
Corrosion deserves practical attention. The NACE IMPACT study estimated global corrosion costs at about 3.4% of worldwide gross domestic product, showing why material selection cannot rely on appearance. List chlorides, acids, moisture, chemicals, and cleaning agents. Check whether the mesh will face heat, vibration, abrasion, or repeated bending. Austenitic stainless steel may suit many wet environments, but “stainless” does not mean corrosion-proof.
I have seen specifications fail because cleaning chemicals were ignored. That mistake is easy to repeat. Require test data, dimensional tolerances, and traceable inspection records. ISO 9044 provides requirements for industrial woven wire cloth, including opening and wire specifications. Performance should be verified under realistic operating conditions, not only in a dry sample check.
