Choosing a blind rivet starts with the installation tool, not the rivet package. Check the tool’s nosepiece, mandrel capacity, and access clearance. A hand riveter may suit light repairs and occasional assembly. Pneumatic or battery-powered tools work better for repeated production. The tool must pull the mandrel fully. Do not guess.
Load requirements deserve careful attention. Shear loads act across the joint, while tensile loads try to separate the materials. Select a rivet material and diameter that suit both forces. Check the grip range against the combined thickness of the sheets. A rivet that is too short may not form correctly. One that is too long can leave a weak, uneven backside.
Vibration requires extra caution. I once treated a static joint like a vibrating assembly, and loosening appeared after testing. A small trial joint could have exposed that mistake earlier.
Working conditions can change the correct choice. Moisture may encourage corrosion between different metals. Heat can reduce strength or damage nearby coatings. Outdoor joints may need greater resistance to water and temperature changes.
In thin sheet, excessive setting force can distort the surface. Set a few sample rivets, then inspect the formed head and surrounding sheet. Check for gaps, cracking, rotation, or pull-through.
Some recommendations remain uncertain until the actual materials are tested. Record the tool setting, rivet size, sheet thickness, and test result before installation.
